Kunanbayev (Abayuly) Turagul (1875-1934) – literary critic, poet, translator, biographer of Abai, public figure.

He was born in 1875 in the East Kazakhstan region, Abai district.

Turagul Kunanbayev received a comprehensive education, knew Russian, Arabic languages. Since childhood, he has been attached to musical and poetic samples created by Abai Kunanbayev.

He was closely acquainted with the figures of Alashorda A. Bukeikhanov, M. Dulatov, Zh. Aimauytov. Turagul, together with his great-nephew Kakitai Iskakuly, first published Abai's poetry collection in St. Petersburg in 1909. Turagul Kunanbayev did a lot to preserve the works of Abai, made an invaluable contribution to the compilation of his biography. Since 1922 he has been engaged in creative activity.

Among his many works, the most valuable work is the book-memoir "About Father Abai", written at the request of M. Auezov. Turagul compiled a detailed description of Abai's life and work. He created the verses "I asked Allah for this day", "Letter", "Abisha", "Reply Letter", etc. The main part of Turagul's works are literary translations. The story of M. Gorky "Chelkash", translated into Kazakh, was published in 1925 in the magazine "Tan". A. S. Neverov's stories "Marya the Bolshevik", "I am in Love with Life" translated by Turagul were published as a separate book in Moscow in 1927. He translated the works of Jack London "Eskimo Kish", "Martin Eden" (the manuscript has not been preserved), B. Prus "Antek". His poems, the translation of "Chelkash", the memory "About Father Abai", the research article about Abai were included in the collection "Students-Poets" (1993, 1 book). The memoir "About Father Abai" was published as a separate book edited by B. Baigaliev.

In the late 20s of the last century, his family was convicted and exiled to the Syrdarya district, and his son was shot as an enemy of the people. Turagul himself has lived in Shymkent for the last years. In 1934, Turagul died of a serious illness in Shymkent. Unfortunately, Turagul's grave has not been preserved: the territory of the old cemetery was subsequently built up with buildings of the Shymkent Chemical Pharmaceutical Plant.
